wear slip on shoes (with socks) - have all your stuff ready at the security line, boarding passes in hand with id, have your laptop out.
don't wear a lot of jewelry (no setting off sensors), bring plenty of reading material, wear comfy clothes and no perfume (close quarters).

As an ex cabin crew member I do know that upgrading will depend on catering. They won't upgrade to business or first class if their aren't sufficient meals on board for that class. Your chances of getting an upgrade really depend on a last minute cancellation or if extra meals were ordered.
